======================================================================== TITEL: Ad hoc and Sensor Networks ======================================================================== ABSTRACT: Wireless and mobile networks are an exciting new research area bringing together researchers from different backgrounds, from networking to distributed systems, from embedded systems to simulation, from graph theory to computational geometry, from operating systems to databases. In particular the rapidly growing areas of ad hoc and sensor networks demand new networking solutions, because i) wireless devices have lower bandwidth and ii) wireless devices are mobile and therefore the topology of the network changes rather frequently. As a consequence, protocols for wireless and mobile networks should i) have as little communication overhead as possible and ii) should run as fast as possible. Both goals can only be achieved by developing efficient distributed algorithms (so-called "local" algorithms). In this talk I will highlight a few fundamental ideas and techniques. ======================================================================== Kurzbiographie zu Professor Wattenhofer ======================================================================== Roger Wattenhofer received his doctorate in computer science in 1998 from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. From 1999 to 2001 he was in the USA, first at Brown University in Providence, RI, then at Microsoft Research in Redmond, WA. He is now professor at the Information Technology and Electrical Engineering Department, ETH Zurich. Roger Wattenhofer's research interests include a variety of algorithmic and systems aspects in networking and distributed computing; in particular, peer-to-peer computing, ad hoc and sensor networks. He won several awards and prices, including the ETHZ Silver Medal for his PhD and best paper awards at the top conferences PODC'03, PODC'04, DISC'04 und MobiCom'04, and was coach of the Swiss Olympic Team in Informatics from 1997-99.
