A Multi-Agent Based Approach to Enable Cyber Physical Production Systems

In order to be prepared for future challenges facing industrial production domain, Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) consisting of intelligent entities which collaborate and exchange information globally are being proclaimed recently as the 4th industrial revolution.

Abstract

In order to be prepared for future challenges facing industrial production domain, Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) consisting of intelligent entities which collaborate and exchange information globally are being proclaimed recently as the 4th industrial revolution. In this context, the service-oriented architecture is often proposed. Agent technologies have been studied intensively in academia within the last decades and applications are recently applied successfully to the production domain. The applicability of agent technology for realizing CPPS with real time and dependability requirements is discussed and shown based on selected scenarios. The talk concludes with opportunities and open research issues that need to be faced in order to achieve agent-based CPPSs in the context of Industrie 4.0.

Biography

Birgit Vogel-Heuser conducts research and the development and system evolution of distributed intelligent embedded systems in mechatronic products and production systems, with the aim of improving product quality, the efficiency and consistency of engineering activities and operational availability. She develops methods, descriptive aids and tools for integrating the various perspectives of mechatronic systems (mechanical, electrical/electronic and software) and phases in the life cycle and their interactions. Key non-functional requirements are real-time behaviour, modularity, availability and usability. Her research projects range from fundamental research in automation technology to the derivation of requirements from industrial applications and the development of prototype tools. After graduating in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH), Prof. Vogel-Heuser earned her doctorate degree there (1991) in the area of robot programming in mechanical engineering. She acquired industrial experience over a ten year period, including a position as Engineering Director for the Siempelkamp Group (systems engineering). After various professorships (Hagen 1996; Wuppertal 2000; Kassel 2006), she assumed a professorship in the Department of Automation and Information Systems (formerly: Department of Information Technology) at TUM (2009). Since 2013 she is the spokeswoman of the collaborative Research Centre SFB768: "Managing cycles in Innovation processes -integrated development of product-service systems based on technical products" and became guest professor at the Cooperative Research Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems at the University of Cincinnati (2014).
