The Internet as a labyrinth: a failed cognitive enhancement

The Human Computer Interaction Group is welcoming Cristina Voinea from the University of Bucharest to the Lunchtime Scientific Series.

Abstract

In this talk we claim that the Internet has evolved towards the shape of an information labyrinth despite the techno-optimistic claims linking it with one of the most efficient means for cognitive enhancement. We critically assess the such statements by offering a brief survey of some of the Internet-based processes and phenomena which emerged as potential threats to our cognitive capacities. In the last part we will sketch a solution or, more precisely, an attempt of finding Ariadne’s thread that could guide us to the center (where the potential for enhancement lies) and then out of the informational labyrinth that is today’s Internet.
