Formal Concept Analysis is a field of applied mathematics based on a mathematization of “concept” and “concept hierarchy”.

Abstract

Formal Concept Analysis is a field of applied mathematics based on a mathematization of “concept” and “concept hierarchy”. It uses the algebraic theory of ordered sets and lattices for the representation and investigation of qualitative data. A strong mathematical background, expressive graphics and effective algorithms make this theory a versatile tool in many areas of data analysis and knowledge processing. We give an introduction to the basic ideas, illustrated by examples from different areas.

Biography

Bernhard Ganter is professor for algebraic structure theory at TU Dresden. In the 1980’s he started, together with Rudolf Wille and Peter Burmeister, the field of formal concept analysis, which now is used in areas like data and text mining, machine learning, ontology management among others.
