Abstract

Javier Jaén will discuss in this seminar how technology has changed and will change education. In this context, the seminar will present the research activities and projects carried out at FutureLab (Technical University of Valencia) and will discuss how the technologies developed (augmented reality, bio-inspired context-aware systems and interactive surfaces) have been/may be used in the context of education. The seminar will also present future research directions and challenges in the field of ambient assisted learning.

Biography

Javier Jaén is an associate professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV). He obtained PhD degree from UPV, a Master of Science degree from Virginia Technology Institute (EE.UU.), and a Diplome d’etudes approfondies (DEA) from Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (France) in all of them with honors. He has been staff member of the European Particle Physics laboratory (CERN) in Switzerland and acted as deputy manager of the EU Grid Computing (DataGrid) Project. He has been recipient of the U.S.A. Fulbright scholarship, the Academic Excellence award to the best professor of the year at UPV, the Microsoft Research Embedded Systems Award, and the Spanish eMobility and ETI awards. He also received the best PhD dissertation award from UPC and the award of the social committee from UPV.

He is currently the leader of the ISSI-Futurelab team and his research focuses on Ubiquitous computing, smart surfaces , creativity and learning support systems, Hybrid Museums and Soft Computing. He has been the main researcher of joint research projects with Microsoft Research Cambridge, Telefonica R&D, Bancaja Bank, and America’s Cup Management, among others. He has co-authored more than 50 research papers and he is a reviewer of international journals including: Expert Systems with Applications, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, IET Software, Science of Computer Programming, International Journal of Human Computer Interaction, Interacting with Computers, and Future Generation Computing Systems among others. He also serves as a reviewer of the Spanish National Research Program and the National Chile Research Program.

This lecture is organized by the Human Computer Interaction Group at the Institute of Design and Assessment of Technology. The informal meeting offers people the possibility to exchange scientific thoughts, questions and know-how. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting and to bring along his/her own lunch.
