The Internet is the most widely known representative of a Distributed System. Research in this area is concerned with the integration of distributed software systems into global information systems. Software platforms for the development of distributed systems play an important role in the further development of the information society. Research in the field of software services, databases, internet security as well as electronic payment is a requirement for commerce on the internet to reach maturity.

In the research area of Business Informatics at the faculty of informatics, scientists deal with organizational informatics, electronic commerce, electronic government, knowledge management and management support systems. Research and its applications concentrate on customer-oriented and inter-organizational intelligent information systems.

Computational Intelligence is concerned with intelligent, human-like problem solving by means of computing machines. At the Vienna University of Technology, research groups are working on issues of the acquisition, representation, and automated manipulation of data and knowledge in general. Special fields of expertise are automatic deduction, semantic web and web knowledge extraction, hardware & software verification, as well as intelligent software and internet agents.

The research area of Media Informatics, Visualisation and Computer Vision deals with different digital media like images, text, graphics, animation, audio and speech. At the same time, virtual und augmented reality technologies and their applications are gaining in importance. New methods for real-time image processing are important for computer graphics and image analysis. Additional research fields are the visualization of large amounts of data and the design of new interaction techniques for intelligent (three-dimensional) interfaces between users and computer systems.

The main focus of Computer Engineering (Technische Informatik) at the faculty of informatics is the field of embedded systems. Microprocessors can be found in many facets of everyday life (cars, household appliances …) and have to meet high requirements regarding fault tolerance, safety and real-time performance. An integrative research approach combines computer science, communication technologies, microelectronics, and microsystems. The main emphasis is on networked embedded systems, fault-tolerant systems, real-time systems, wireless communications and pervasive computing.
