Embedded microprocessors can be found in communication devices, cars and medical equipment as well as industrial plants, domestic appliances and consumer electronics. They result in intelligent, user-friendly and safe products which are increasingly able to communicate with other appliances in their environment and therefore act as part of a larger system. In the face of growing system complexity there is a need to guarantee error tolerance, security, real-time capability and resource efficiency. Regardless of the strong link with microelectronics, modern embedded systems thus increasingly rely on models, algorithms and protocols – the core of computer engineering.
